HOW DOES EVAPO-RUST WORK?
EVAPO-RUST works through a process called ‘selective chelation’, where large synthetic molecules form a bond with various metals and then hold them in solution. The active ingredient in EVAPO-RUST bonds specifically to iron oxide.
It can remove iron oxide from iron, but it’s too weak to remove iron from steel.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR EVAPO-RUST TO WORK?
De-rusting times depend on the extent / depth of the rust. Lightly rusted components may need only an hour to see results, while heavily-rusted parts may require up to 12 hours or more.
NOTE: EVAPO-RUST works best at temperatures above 18ºC. The warmer the solution, the faster it works.
IS EVAPO-RUST REUSABLE?
EVAPO-RUST can be used multiple times; however, the number of uses depends on the size of the components you’re de-rusting and how heavily rusted they are.
Generally speaking, the darker the solution gets, the less effective it becomes. Eventually, you can expect the bath to turn dark black and for the rust-removing performance to drop off.
You can read more on reusing EVAPO-RUST here.
WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER DE-RUSTING?
Depending on how porous the surface metal is, residual rust may still be embedded in the metal’s pits and crevices after the initial soaking. In these cases, it’s advisable to rinse the component with water after the initial use and to re-soak in EVAPO-RUST for a second treatment.
On that note, you should always rinse the component with clean water after any treatment, as tiny iron molecules will be embedded in the EVAPO-RUST and may activate and re-form rust if left to dry on the metal’s surface.
Coat the component with Q20 or CRC Industries’ Multi-Purpose Precision Lubricant 2-26 for longer term corrosion protection.
DO I HAVE TO CLEAN THE PARTS BEFORE DE-RUSTING?
No. EVAPO-RUST has detergents which penetrate oils and dirt. However, surface contaminants will slow down the process as the solution has to first soak through the soil and grime before coming into contact with the metal.
However, it’s best to remove heavy grease before de-rusting.
WILL EVAPO-RUST REMOVE PAINT & IS IT SAFE ON OTHER MATERIALS?
No. EVAPO-RUST will not damage copper, brass, aluminium, glass, rubber, plastic, paint or clothing.
HOW DO I USE EVAPO-RUST IN A COOLING SYSTEM?
1. Drain the cooling system and rinse with water.
2. Fill the system with Evapo-Rust®. (Do NOT dilute.)
3. Run the engine under normal conditions, shut the engine down and let sit for a couple of hours to overnight.
4. Drain the system into a container for later use.
5. Flush the system with water.
6. Repeat process (1-5) if necessary.
7. Fill the system with proper coolant/antifreeze.
WILL EVAPO-RUST REMOVE BLUING & OTHER OXIDE FINISHES?
Yes. EVAPO-RUST will remove these coatings. Anodizing will not be removed. Powder coating and paint will not be removed as long as the paint does not contain oxides.
